My life and career path

Hello District 2!  I am your neighbor, Leslie Schill, a Fall Creek community member for the past 13 years. I am the mom of Nicholas and Frances, aged 14 and 10, who attend IHS and Fall Creek Elementary. And I am an urban planner, a vegetable gardener, a soccer player, and a dog walker.

I am originally from Maryland and have lived a couple lives in Tompkins County. First, when I was a graduate student I lived in Enfield while attending Cornell, where I received a Masters in Regional Planning in 2002. After graduation, I was selected to be a Capitol City Fellow with the District of Columbia government, so my husband Joe and I moved to DC where I worked in local government for 5 years. I held progressively higher management roles, first as the City's Park Planner then Chief of Planning and Design at the DC Department of Parks and Recreation. We worked closely with communities across the city to revitalize parks, design needed open spaces, and build new recreation centers - neighborhood hubs that provided social services and physical activities.

Joe and I returned to Ithaca after our son was born and have been in Fall Creek since 2007, when I accepted a position at the Tompkins County Planning Department and worked for the next 5 years on local planning initiatives including: energy and greenhouse gas emissions reduction, trail and corridor studies, agriculture resource analysis, and regional green comprehensive planning for the Southern Tier. For the past 9 years I have worked at Cornell. Today, I lead the Campus Planning Office, where I serve as the steward of the Ithaca campus master plan, complete site plans for projects, and serve as a primary liaison for community collaborative planning efforts. In this capacity, I partner regularly with most of Tompkins County's 16 municipalities.

I am committed to serving this community, and am honored be your elected County Legislator, representing District 2! This is truly a return to my public service roots. Currently, I serve on the following County Committees:

  • 2 Standing Committees of the Legislature: Health & Human Services, Government Operations

  • 3 Commissions and Boards, as Liaison to the Legislature: Human Rights Commissions, Homeless & Housing Task Force, Downtown Ithaca Alliance

  • 2 Other County Advisory Committees: Planning Advisory Board (Vice Chair), Community Housing Development Fund (Program Oversight Committee)
